Biological Information

Background Information:

TTBK1 is a member of a novel tau kinase family (TTBK1 and TTBK2) and is specifically expressed in the CNS and reproductive tissues. Although the precise physiological functions of TTBK1 are unknown, it appears to play an important role in the brain both during development and postdevelopmental aging and has been identified as a neuronal specific kinase that is involved in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FLTD) pathologies.
