Biological Information

Background Information:

PRMT1 (Protein arginine methyltransferase 1) is a protein arginine methyltransferase that catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) to the guanidino nitrogen of arginine residues in proteins. PRMT1 specifically targets the omega nitrogen of arginine residues, and catalyzes the formation of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) residues, which can modulate the structure and function of target proteins.
PRMT1 has been shown to play a role in the regulation of gene expression by modulating the function of transcription factors, co-regulators, and RNA polymerase II.
PRMT1 has been identified as a potential therapeutic target for various diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Its inhibition has been shown to suppress tumor growth and improve heart function in animal models of heart disease.
